Understanding NDIS plans and funding periods

Navigating an NDIS plan can feel overwhelming at first, yet understanding support budgets, funding components and budget periods can help participants make the most of available funding and avoid running out of supports too early.

What is an NDIS Plan?

An NDIS plan is an individualised document created with a planner from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). A plan is designed to help increase your independence and participation in the community. It outlines your personal goals, situation and allocated funding to purchase disability supports and includes:

  • your goals
  • the supports funded by the NDIS
  • funding for supports
  • how funding is managed
  • the length of the plan
  • funding periods or budget release schedules

Funding is based on what the NDIA considers “reasonable and necessary” supports related to your disability.

What are the NDIS support categories?

Most NDIS plans are divided into support budgets. These may include:

Core supports

Core supports help with everyday activities such as: These budgets are often flexible, meaning funding may be moved between some core categories depending on the plan management type: self managed vs NDIA managed vs plan managed.

  • personal care
  • domestic assistance
  • community participation
  • consumables like continence products.

These budgets are often flexible, meaning funding may be moved between some core categories depending on the plan management type: self managed vs NDIA managed vs plan managed.

Capacity building supports

Capacity building funding helps participants develop skills and independence. This can include:

  • occupational therapy
  • speech therapy
  • behaviour supports
  • employment assistance
  • support coordination

These budgets are generally more specific and usually cannot be moved across categories.

Capital supports

Capital supports fund higher-cost items such as:

  • assistive technology
  • home modifications
  • specialised equipment.

Recurring supports

Some participants also receive recurring supports, such as transport funding.

What are funding components?

Under newer NDIS plans, funding is increasingly organised into “funding components.” These are grouped amounts of funding linked to particular supports or categories.

This means:

  • some funding components can only be used for specific supports, while some are more flexible than others
  • funding cannot be used outside the allocated category
  • participants must spend funding in line with their approved plan.

For example, funding allocated for therapy supports generally cannot be used for assistive technology or support workers.

What are NDIS funding periods?

A funding period is the amount of funding made available over a set period of time. This means that:

  • a 12-month plan may release funding quarterly when the funding periods are set to three months
  • participants can spend up to the available amount during a set period
  • unused funds roll into the next funding period within the same plan.

The NDIA says funding periods are meant to:

  • help participants manage budgets more effectively
  • reduce overspending
  • ensure funding lasts the entire plan period
  • lower risks of fraud or financial exploitation.

Monitoring the plan budget

Regardless of whether the funding is self managed, plan managed or NDIA managed participants are still responsible for monitoring how funding is used.

The NDIA recommends regularly checking available balances, claims, spending patterns and upcoming funding releases through the my NDIS app or participant portal.

To avoid running out of funding before the next budget period:

  • track spending regularly
  • understand which supports are flexible and which are stated
  • work closely with your providers or plan manager
  • keep invoices and records organised
  • seek advice early if your supports or circumstances change.

Understanding the NDIS plan is essential to getting the most out of supports. Taking the time to understand support budgets, funding categories and release periods can help you make informed choices and maintain consistent access to the supports you need.
